INSTANT WINNER :: week 15 :: year 2025

kali uchis, ella fitzgerald, madonna, the tulips

I stayed up too late last night. This morning I walked around and ate ceviche and some soup and that fixed me. I’ve been devotedly watching Love on the Spectrum from Netflix this weekend, and it makes me cry because it’s all so earnest. I wonder sometimes if culturally, we hate earnestness… In the '90s in Austin, there was a music/art movement that was briefly known as New Sincerity which is perhaps best exemplified by the music of Daniel Johnston and even some of Richard Linklater's movies… that crushing, romantic earnestness never gets old for me.

Here’s what I loved and listened to this week. You can listen to the pod above, save the playlist on Spotify, or check out the tracks below. 🤎

  1. Sunshine & Rain - Kali Uchis :: Kali Uchis writes some of the best melodies in pop and I’m going to stand by that statement forever. She don’t miss.

  1. How Long Has This Been Going On? - Ella Fitzgerald :: I don’t know why I’ve been thinking about this song this week… It was one of those childhood-defining songs, which in retrospect, is kind of strange. I loved the artwork for these Ella compilation albums when I was a kid, I just thought they were so cool… I still like the line, “There were chills/up 'n down my spine/and some thrills/I can’t define.” That's it.

  1. I Want You - Madonna :: I’m fully obsessed with Madonna. I didn’t grow up listening to any of her music, so all of it is new to me, and therefore all feels very fresh. When I was 20 I went to a house party with a very gay Frenchman and in the middle of the party he screamed, I LOVE MADONNA!!!! Now I get it. There’s something about modern music, maybe with TikTok(?) where music and time feel so nonlinear…

  1. still love you (todavia) - The Tulips :: I found The Tulips on TikTok. Obviously, very influenced by The Marias in terms of production, but I love this song and their whole vibe. It’s sweet and fun and reminds me a little of indie-pop acts that were emerging pre-2010… It’s sincere! I think they just got signed to Island Records, we love to see the girlies win.

1 mil kisses. See you next week.
